Circular Economy Strategies to Increase the Level of Ambition of Climate Action
Organized as part of the Innovate4Climate conference, this workshop proposes to explore the benefits and challenges of incorporating circular economy principles in the NDCs during the 2020 revision process to increase their level of ambition and better alignment with the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The event also explores how circular economy can support comprehensive Long-term Climate Strategies in the context of the Paris Agreement.
Current NDC commitments address only half the gap between business as usual and the 1.5°C Paris Agreement pathway. To comply with such target, about 15 additional Gton CO2e still need to be eliminated. Hence, additional innovative solutions must be implemented to complement existing efforts.
Climate change and circularity should be addressed in conjunction, considering that i) over 50% of GHG emissions are related to material management and ii) the trend in developing countries is the coupling of economic growth with gradual decrease in resource efficiency.
In this workshop, we will hear the experience from the European Commission and its circular economy strategies, West Africa NDC revision process, Lao PDR´s experience linking circular economy and climate action, and UNDP related experiences in the implementation of the NDC Support Programme.
The event is organized by UNDP NDC Support Programme and NEYEN.IO.
