The off-grid island of Lelepa in the Republic of Vanuatu, located in the South Pacific Ocean, has just started trialing a modular energy solution called ‘Power Blox’. Power cubes with a modular design and grid-connectivity, much like blocks of Lego, allow for expansion and growth of the grid over time and at the pace needed by the rural community, while delivering all the other benefits that come with renewable energy, largely through improving livelihoods without damaging the environment.

By keeping a minimum of 60 percent forest cover, Bhutan's forests cancel out a proportion of its emissions. This is done through carbon sequestration, where plants suck up carbon dioxide through photosynthesis. Building on its previous country support in the run up to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, UNDP conducted a survey to assess capacity development support needs among developing countries as they prepare for implementation of the Paris Agreement and, in particular, their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The survey addressed countries’ progress on NDC implementation planning, as well as capacity development or technical assistance needs related to NDC implementation.

With only 23% of the population with access to electricity, Kenya is committed to expanding access to energy for its growing population. Wood fuel has remained the most important source of energy, meeting over 70% of the country’s total energy consumption needs. This has put immense pressure on Kenya’s forests. The Constitution calls for efforts to increase tree cover to 10 per cent of Kenya’s total surface area.

The main objective of the NAMA report is to further develop the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system in Jakarta in order to reduce traffic congestion, increase energy efficiency in transport, improve urban air quality, and reduce GHG emissions from urban transport. The NAMA includes three main components, notably the procurement of gas-fueled buses for the Transjakarta busway, construction of bus lanes, bus stops, and gas refueling stations.

Charcoal is one of the main sources of domestic energy in Ghana. Around 80% of the rural population is dependent on wood fuel as their primary source of fuel, while charcoal is the primary source of fuel for more than 50% of the population living in urban areas. Given the projected growth of the urban population in Ghana, charcoal use in the short and medium term, will continue to be an important source of household energy for cooking particularly in urban areas of the country.
